The Ultradyne Athena Compensator, .350 Cal, ½”x28 threads is designed to limit the amount of sound and gases that are directed back towards the shooter by venting the gas at an angle, and then forward. What this may mean in recoil impact is more than made up for in the amount of sound that is directed away from the shooter.
